6 TorinoFilmLab-supported films in the Oscar race!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the official list of national candidates for the Best Foreign Language Film, and no less than 6 TFL-supported films - coming from 3 continents - will represent their respective countries in the Oscar race. Half of them are debut features; 3 are helmed by female directors and 3 by male.

A CIAMBRA by Jonas Carpignano has been chosen for Italy: earlier this year the film, developed at TorinoFilmLab in 2015 and co-produced by Martin Scorsese, won the Europa Cinemas Label of the Cannes Directors' Fortnight. This is the first time a TFL film represents Italy.

BARRAGE by Laura Schroeder will be vying for Luxembourg. Developed at TFL in 2010, it premiered at this year's Berlinale Forum and boasts Isabelle Huppert in its cast.

FÉLICITÉ by Alain Gomis is the first candidate ever for Senegal. Supported with the TFL Audience Design Fund 2016, it scored the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize in Competition, also at Berlinale 2017.

Kirsten Tan's POP AYE, an "on the road" tale of friendship between a man and his elephant, will run for Singapore. The director's debut feature received the Special Jury Award for Screenwriting at Sundance Film Festival, where it was selected in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition: the project's development and production have been supported by TorinoFilmLab.

Another female director's first feature, QUIT STARING AT MY PLATE by Hana Jusic, will be Croatia's candidate. Premiered at the Venice Days 2016, the film was developed at TorinoFilmLab in 2013-14.

THE WOUND by John Trengove has been selected by South Africa as its national candidate. Supported by TFL throughout the stages of development, production and distribution, the film competed at Sundance and subsequently was the opening film for Berlinale Panorama 2017.
