TFL Meeting Event 2017: Jury members & FeatureLab Awards unveiled

October 26, 2017

While we are getting closer and closer to the 10th edition of the TFL Meeting Event (24-25 November), we are delighted to unveil the composition of this year’s Jury, whose members will assign several Production and Co-Production Awards to the best among the FeatureLab projects.

Alongside the President of TorinoFilmLab’s promoting organization Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Laura Milani, we are pleased to host: acclaimed Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz; renowned London-born, US-educated, Moroccan-Iraqi filmmaker and artist Tala Hadid; emerging American helmer Anna Rose Holmer; and Lebanese producer Georges Schoucair.

After his feature debut, MADAME SATÃ, premiered in Un Certain Regard in 2002 and won over 40 prizes internationally, Karim Aïnouz became a regular at the Venice Film Festival (LOVE FOR SALE, 2006; I TRAVEL BECAUSE I HAVE TO, I COME BACK BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, 2010), and Cannes (THE SILVER CLIFF, 2011), while his latest feature, FUTURO BEACH, was presented in Competition at Berlinale 2014.

Tala Hadid’s award-winning films screened at several festivals around the world, including Berlinale and Venice, and they were shown, among other venues, at the MoMA and the Lincoln Center in NYC, and the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. Her most recent works include THE NARROW FRAME OF MIDNIGHT, premiered in Toronto in 2014 and HOUSE IN THE FIELDS at the Berlinale 2017.

Anna Rose Holmer rose to fame thanks to her critically acclaimed narrative directorial debut, THE FITS (Venice Biennale College – Cinema 2015, Sundance Next 2016), nominated among others for Breakthrough Director at the 2016 Gotham Awards. Winner of the 2017 Independent Spirit Award Someone to Watch, she also produced/was creatively involved in the making of several dance-themed documentaries, selected among others at Tribeca, IDFA, and SXSW.

Georges Schoucair is the owner of
the Middle-East market leader production house Abbout Productions, whose films screened at major festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Locarno, Berlinale and Karlovy Vary among others. He also founded MC Distribution, focused on distributing Arab and international films in the Middle-East. His most recent endeavour is Schortcut Films, whose objective is to identify and invest in high quality international independent films (among others FÉLICITÉ by Alain Gomis, ZAMA by Lucrecia Martel).

As mentioned above, the FeatureLab 2017 participants will be vying for a series of Production and Co-Production Awards – assigned by the Jury, but they will also compete for the collateral prizes offered by TFL’s associated partners, namely: the ARTE International Prize for the further development of the project; and the EP2C Post Production Award, supporting the participation of a producer to the EP2C training programme, as well as a grant in post-production services in the Filmmore facilities in Amsterdam or Brussels.

The FeatureLab 2017 selection comprises 10 debuts and 2 second feature films. The full line-up of projects is available here.
