TFL Films & Series
April 23, 2019
After the announcement of the selections of PORT AUTHORITY in Un Certain Regard, and of ABOU LEILA and LITIGANTE at Cannes Critics’ Week, we’re thrilled to announce that TFL Film THE ORPHANAGE will have its world premiere in Competition at the 51st Cannes Directors’ Fortnight (15-25 May 2019)!
Second feature by Shahrbanoo Sadat after WOLF AND SHEEP (Art Cinema Award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2016), THE ORPHANAGE was developed by the Afghan director together with German producer Katja Adomeit within FeatureLab 2016, and presented during the annual showcase of work-in-progress films TFL Coming Soon 2018.
The story is set in the late 1980’s in Kabul, during the Civil War. 15-year-old Qodrat lives in the streets of Kabul and sells cinema tickets on the black market. He is a big Bollywood fan and he daydreams himself in some of his favorite movie scenes. One day, the Police bring him to the Soviet orphanage. But in Kabul, the political situation is changing. Qodrat and all the children want to defend their home.
THE ORPHANAGE is a co-production between Adomeit Film (Denmark), La Fabrica Nocturna (France), Samsa Film (Luxembourg) and Wolf Pictures (Afghanistan). World sales are handled by Luxbox.
Last but not least, we’re happy to share the presence of TFL Alumnus Gabriel Abrantes in the Short Films Competition with his new project THE MARVELOUS MISADVENTURES OF THE STONE LADY.
