TorinoFilmLab heads to Toronto Film Festival with 4 TFL Films!

The North American film festival revealed its line-up: the Toronto International Film Festival 2019 will welcome no less than 4 TFL Films that were developed and supported by the Lab!
MADE IN BANGLADESH will world premiere in ‘Contemporary World Cinema’
We are extremely proud to announce the World Premiere of MADE IN BANGLADESH, directed by female filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain and selected in the Contemporary World Cinema section of TIFF 2019.
This production by Les Films de l'Après-Midi (France), Khona Talkies (Bangladesh), Beofilm (Denmark) and Midas Filmes (Portugal) focuses on a woman’s attempt to organize her garment factory co-workers in Dhaka following a fatal fire. It reveals ugly walls of resistance that arise in this piercing indictment of exploitative labour practices and the global trade apparatus supporting them.
MADE IN BANGLADESH won the TFL Audience Design Fund 2018 (€ 40.000), and a delegation of the film team participated last month in an Audience Design consultation alongside two TFL experts: Emanuela Barbano and Clara Miranda Scherffig.
Venice-titles PELICAN BLOOD and SOLE in the line-up
After its World Premiere as Opening Film of Venice’s Orizzonti (read news), Katrin Gebbe’s PELICAN BLOOD will be introduced to the North American audiences as part of the Special Presentations. Gebbe’s second feature film will be screened in this eclectic section dedicated to “high-profile premieres and the world’s leading filmmakers” alongside the latest works from Pedro Almodóvar, Bong Joon-ho and Steven Soderbergh, among others.
PELICAN BLOOD is produced by Junafilm (Germany) and Miramar Film (Bulgaria), and was developed in FeatureLab 2017.
The debut feature by Italian filmmaker Carlo Sironi, SOLE, will for its part be screened in the section Discovery (“director to watch – the future of world cinema”). Produced by Kino Produzioni (Italy) and Lava Films (Poland), in collaboration with RAI Cinema (Italy), the project won the TFL Production Award (€ 50.000) after its participation in the Meeting Event 2017. It will first World Premiere in its home country, in the Orizzonti section of the 76th Venice Film Festival.
Maya Da-Rin’s THE FEVER selected in Wavelengths
The section Wavelengths, opened to “daring, visionary and autonomous voices – film art in the cinema and beyond”, will welcome the International Premiere of Maya Da-Rin’s intriguing debut feature THE FEVER. The film world premiered a few days ago in the International Competition of the 72nd Locarno Film Festival (read news).
Produced by Tamanduá Vermelho (Brazil) and Enquadramento Produçoes (Brazil), in co-production with Komplizen Film (Germany) and Still Moving (France), THE FEVER was developed in ScriptLab 2015 and FeatureLab 2016, and was financially supported through the TFL Co-Production Fund (€ 50.000).
More feature films by TFL Alumni
Last but not least, the Toronto International Film Festival 2019 will also welcome a growing number of films by TFL Alumni, including Oualid Mouaness’ first feature 1982 (Discovery), Olivier Laxe’s FIRE WILL COME (Wavelengths), Pietro Marcello’s MARTIN EDEN (Platform), but also Jessica Woodworth’s THE BAREFOOT EMPEROR, co-directed with Peter Brosens (Contemporary World Cinema) and Haifaa Al Mansour’s THE PERFECT CANDIDATE (Contemporary World Cinema).
TIFF 2019 full schedule will be released on August 20th.
