Red Sea Lodge
a programme of
Red Sea International Film Festival
in collaboration with

Red Sea Lodge 2020

What is the “Red Sea Lodge”?

In April 2019 TorinoFilmLab was approached by the Red Sea International Film Festival (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), to create a tailor-made programme specifically designed for Saudi filmmakers and other film professionals from the region.

The Red Sea Lodge is the result of this partnership: a one-year training initiative, aiming at supporting the development of 12 feature film projects from emerging filmmakers. It is a comprehensive programme, addressed to directors and producers, with scriptwriters if on board, to nurture and further support all aspects of their vision. Every stage of filmmaking is explored, from script consultations to working with experts in the fields of directing, cinematography and sound, through to post-production as well as a commercial focus on financing, sales, and audience engagement. Structured around diverse, stimulating exchanges with colleagues and mentors, the programme is designed to enrich projects through multiple approaches and perspectives. At the end of the programme, all projects present a script and a detailed production dossier.

The main goals of this programme are to build a new cinematographic culture, as well as to support young talents with interesting stories to be told, developed, produced, and eventually shared with national and international audiences.

In collaboration with TorinoFilmLab, at the end of 2019 the Lodge hand-picked twelve projects by emerging filmmakers – 6 from Saudi Arabia, and 6 from all the Arab world –, among 120 applications drawn from 16 countries. It is essential to highlight that 8 of the 12 selected projects involved women film professionals, who are attached to the projects as directors, scriptwriters or producers. 5 out of the 12 selected projects are directed by women.

More information on the projects can be found here:

The Red Sea Lodge is structured around 3 training workshops, organised between October 2019 and November 2020, both in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and online:

- First workshop: 31 October – 11 November 2019 (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)
- Second workshop: 22 – 29 January 2020 (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)
- Third workshop (moved online due to COVID-19 disease): 19 October – 12 November 2020

The presentation of the projects was due to take place during the first edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival, initially planned in March 2020 and now postponed to November 2021. Instead, the pitching session of the Red Sea Lodge will be welcomed by TorinoFilmLab Meeting Event in November 2020.

All participants will be introduced to an audience of international producers, sales agents, and other film industry professionals. Further insight will be granted through one-on-one meetings with Decision Makers, while major visibility will be gained thanks to the TFL Catalogue.
