TFI Torino Film Industry 2020

17-24 November 2020

TFI Torino Film Industry encompasses the 5th edition of Torino Short Film Market, organized by Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio, the masterclasses and events organized by TorinoFilmLab, as well as the Production Days events, organized by Film Commission Torino Piemonte: a selection of pitch sessions, panels and workshops scheduled to be held partly in streaming and partly in presence.

After its successful second edition (800 accredited participants - a 100% increase from last year - and 500 one-to-one meetings during the 5 days event), TFI Torino Film Industry will again be held during the days of the well-established and prestigious Torino Film Festival and will be open to all national and international audiovisual operators and working professionals.

Developed by Film Commission Torino Piemonte – networking both Torino Short Film Market full calendar and an events section by TorinoFilmLab – the TFI Torino Film Industry project is sponsored by Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Regione Piemonte and Città di Torino with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo.

Torino Short Film Market, one of the main European short films event, will mainly take place on line. A few activities, however, will be organized in presence in the courtly and precious historical setting of "Circolo dei lettori" targeting young Italian filmakers.

TorinoFilmLab - whose annual Meeting Event will be held online for the 2020 edition – will make available to TFI accredited participants a number of masterclasses held by international tutors, as well as the SeriesLab Italia pitch sessions and the new TFL Up & Coming Italia programme.

Some of the Production Days events organized by Film Commission Torino Piemonte – addressed to working professionals in Piedmont – are scheduled to take place in presence, at "Circolo dei lettori", whereas a number of networking activities will be carried out on line. TFI Torino Film Industry will again host the annual Italian Doc Screenings Academy edition, a training and networking project promoted by Doc.it.

TFI Torino Film Industry online activites will be made available in full on platform by b.square, located in Torino and specialized in B2B management, as well as supplier of all major international festivals. Streaming events will be supplied by Consorzio Top-IX, located in Torino, as well, listing major collaborations with the audiovisual and European cinema sectors.

The four masterclasses organized by TorinoFilmLab are:

Wednesday, November 18th - 18.00 UTC +1
Pitch Realisation Workshop
With Christopher Mack (USA) - Director, Creative Talent Investment & Development at Netflix International Originals
The workshop will share some best practices on how to create and document the best version of a character-driven series. By asking the right questions and looking at a series using the character's goals and motivations versus the plot, it is possible to create a professional-looking pitch document that will allow a buyer to easily decide whether or not a specific show is right for their streaming service or network.

Thursday, November 19th - 18.00 UTC +1
Behind Chocobar
With Lucrecia Martel (Argentina) - Writer and director
Moderated by Violeta Bava (Head of Studies -  TFL FeatureLab programme)

Martel’s last work: CHOCOBAR - winner of the TFL Co-Production Fund 2020 (€ 50.000) - is a creative documentary about the murder of indigenous activist Javier Chocobar by a white landowner in Argentina. The masterclass will focus on various practical aspects related to the film: the relationship with producers, the use of special effects and the challenges behind the realization of a documentary.

Sunday, November 22nd - 18.00 UTC +1
Script Development practices

With Michel Kammoun (Lebanon/France) - Writer and director
Moderated by Savina Neirotti (TFL Strategical Consultant)

The script as a founding element in making a good film is a sacrosanct truth. Has a great film ever been made from a bad screenplay? As Alfred Hitchcock used to put it: to make a great film you need three things – the script, the script, and the script. The talk will examine script development practices by focusing on personal and professional insights, and tackling working habits, inspirations, influences and writers' emotional roller coasters.

Monday, November 23rd - 18.00 UTC +1
WRITING THE PILOT - Tricks and Tools to Make People Fall in Love with Your Series
With Eszter Angyalosy (Hungary) -  Screenwriter and story editor
The series industry is changing incredibly fast, it seems there are no rules anymore of writing a series but there are still some principles or tools which seem to be used by every successful television show. This masterclass will analyse the pilot of SUCCESSION by HBO and COBRA KAI by Youtube Originals/Netflix - to crack the code of creating a pilot that people will very likely fall in love with.
