French cannibals & zombies in the spotlight: TFL loves genre cinema!

January 31, 2018

From a cannibalistic veterinary student to zombies invading Paris: French genre cinema is witnessing a breath of fresh air. TFL did nurtured - within its FeatureLab programme - two debut films that highly contribute to this new ‘French touch’: RAW by Julia Ducournau (prod. Petit Film) and THE NIGHT EATS THE WORLD by Dominique Rocher (prod. Haut et Court).

RAW premiered at the Cannes Critics’ Week 2016, and just received as many as 6 Cesar nominations this morning, including Best Debut Film, Best Directing & Best Original Screenplay – Julia Ducournau being the only female director running for these last 2 categories. GRAVE (the original title in French) portrays a vegetarian student, who is starting to develop a strange passion for raw meat.

Zombies are invading the streets of Paris in THE NIGHT EATS THE WORLD by Dominique Rocher, a minimalist and psychological survival story featuring Anders Danielsen Lie, Golshifteh Farahani and Denis Lavant. The 80th film coming out of the TorinoFilmLab programmes, THE NIGHT had its French premiere at the 30th Festival Premiers Plans d'Angers, and is currently screened at IFFR - International Film Festival Rotterdam 2018 within the Voices Rotterdämmerung section.
