TOUCH ME NOT and THE HEIRESSES win top prizes at Berlinale 2018!

February 25, 2018

The Jury of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival decided to reward two debut films accompanied by TorinoFilmLab, stage by stage throughout their creative process: the Golden Bear went to TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie while THE HEIRESSES by Marcelo Martinessi won both the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer and Best Actress (Ana Brun).

TorinoFilmLab proudly congratulates the two directors and the whole teams behind TOUCH ME NOT and THE HEIRESSES for these big achievements.

The International Jury awarded the Golden Bear for Best Film to TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie, a film about the fear of intimacy and achieving sexual liberation, constructed on the fluid border between reality and fiction. Earlier, the film also received the GWFF Award for Best First Feature, endowed with € 50.000, by the Jury composed of Jonas Carpignano, Călin Peter Netzer and Noa Regev. About the issues tackled in her film, Adina confesses: “At the age of 20, I thought I knew everything. But as I was aging, from 20 to 40 years old, this conviction got destabilized. I came to realize that I know nothing”.

TOUCH ME NOT is a co-production between Manekino Film (Romania), Rohfilm Productions (Germany), Les Films de L’Etranger (France), PINK (Czech Republic) and Agitprop (Bulgaria). World sales are handled by Doc & Film International.

THE HEIRESSES by Marcelo Martinessi received the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize for a feature film that opens new perspectives and the Silver Bear for Best Actress, awarded to Ana Brun, as well as the FIPRESCI Prize handed out by the critics. This female-centric drama transports us to contemporary Paraguay: the protagonist, Chela is facing a new economic and social situation when her long-time lover is sent to prison for debt. About his film, the director says: "I see Las Herederas as a film about the present that looks at the future. I hope that we can create some essential debates that are difficult in such a conservative society. Paraguayan cinema has emerged in recent years with an interesting variety and we hope that this new film not only enriches but also inspires our generation to believe in cinema and its potential"

THE HEIRESSES is a La Babosa Cine (Paraguay) production, in co-production with Pandora Film (Germany), Mutante Cine (Uruguay), Esquina Filmes (Brazil), La Fábrica Nocturna (France) and Norskfilmprodukjson (Norway). World sales are handled by Luxbox, which already closed some deals with major territories: Italy (Lucky Red), France (Rouge International), the U.K. (Thunderbird Releasing), Benelux (Contact), Scandinavia/Baltics (Edge), as well as Spain (Bteam), Greece (Weird Wave) , Switzerland (Cineworx) and China (Time Vision).

The 2018 International Jury was composed of Tom Tykwer (German filmmaker and producer, Jury President), Cécile de France (Belgian actress), Chema Prado (Spanish photographer and former director of the Filmoteca Española), Adele Romanski (US producer), Ryūichi Sakamoto (Japanese composer) and Stephanie Zacharek (US film critic).
