TFL-supported film BIRDS OF PASSAGE will open the 50th Directors’ Fortnight!

April 17, 2018

TFL Films strikes again at Cannes! After the selection of DIAMANTINO for the 57th Cannes Critics’ Week announced yesterday, we are thrilled to announce that BIRDS OF PASSAGE by the Colombian pair Ciro Guerra & Cristina Gallego will open the 50th Directors’ Fortnight (May 9th-19th)!

Guerra will make its return to Cannes after the successes of THE WIND JOURNEYS (Un Certain Regard 2009) and EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, which won the Art Cinema Award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2015.

The story of BIRDS OF PASSAGE takes place in Colombia in the 1970s, when the demand for marijuana hits the country, quickly turning farmers into seasoned businessmen. Unfolding in the Guajira desert, BIRDS OF PASSAGE follows an Wayuu indigenous family who takes a leading role in this new drug trade, and discovers the perks of wealth and power, but with a violent and tragic downside.

Berlin-based Films Boutique’s head of sales Louis Balsan described it as a “film noir, a western and a Greek tragedy” in its “depiction of a family disintegrating and torn apart”.

The film is a co-production between Ciudad Lunar (Colombia), Blond Indian Films (Colombia), Pimienta Films (Mexico), Films Boutique (Germany) and Snowglobe (Denmark). It received the support of TorinoFilmLab during the TFL Meeting Event 2017 through the TFL Audience Design Fund Award (€ 40.000), which aimed at supporting its international distribution and encouraging innovative audience engagement strategies.

Moreover, we are extremely happy to announce the selection of Juanita Onzaga’s OUR SONG TO WAR for the Short Films section of Directors’ Fortnight. The Colombo-Belgian filmmaker is currently developing her first feature within ScriptLab 2018.
