DIAMANTINO scores Grand Prize at Cannes Critics' Week!

May 17, 2018

TorinoFilmLab has a new occasion to celebrate thanks to Cannes Critics' Week: the Jury chaired by Norwegian director Joachim Trier decided to honour DIAMANTINO by Gabriel Abrantes & Daniel Schmidt with the main award, the Nespresso Grand Prize!

The first feature by the duo made a great impression during its premiere on Friday. "Whimsical and outlandish words come to mind when trying to describe DIAMANTINO", writes Cineuropa; "the freshest blast of gonzo comic energy", says Variety. The two directors explain: "we wanted to make a zany romantic comedy that played with contemporary conflicts such as the cult of celebrity, the rise of the extreme right, and the refugee crisis".

The project is the result of a co-production between Les Films du Bélier (France), Maria & Mayer (Portugal) and Syndrome Films (Brazil). International sales are handled by Charades.

It is the third time in five years that a TFL Film receives this distinction: Fabio Grassadonia & Antonio Piazza had won over the Jury members in 2013 with SALVO, while MIMOSAS by Olivier Laxe was awarded in 2016.

This year, TFL Alumna Jacqueline Lentzou was also honoured at Cannes Critics' Week for her short HECTOR MALOT - THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR (Best Short Film).
