biography

Born in Strasbourg (France), studies in Chemistry at Metz University (France). During 3 years (1974 to 1977) travelled in Eastern and Central Africa where he worked as teacher (Gabon) and cultural manager (Central African Republic).

Went in Switzerland (1978) and worked as social worker (drug addicts) during three years. Worked in a Swiss NGO (E-Changer, until 1990, involved in development projects mainly in African and Latin American countries).

Collaborated with the Fribourg international film festival since its creation in 1980 - focusing on the promotion of films from Asia, Africa and Latin America -, leads the festival from 1992 to 2007.

The Fribourg international Film Festival has in particular organised the first complete tributes to G. Aravindan (with new prints - 1994) and Ritwik Ghatak (restored prints in collaboration with trigon-film which is distributing the films - 1991) - both from India, Jorge Sanjines (Bolivia – 1996)) and many others important film makers like Lee Chang-ho (South Korea - 1993) and the first programme in Europe of South Korean documentaries (2000).

Has also participated to the creation of the trigon-film Foundation (1988), distributor of many Asian, Latin American and African films in Switzerland. Now, member of the Foundation Board and the executive board.

From 1997 to 2003, was appointed as film expert at the Direction of Development and Co-operation of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Member of the expert board of the Montecinemaverita Foundation (Lugano, Switzerland). Foundation supporting productions (or postproduction) of films from Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. In 2005, participated to the creation of the Visions Sud-Est Fund, together with trigon-film and Nyon’s Visions du Réel (documentary film festival based in Switzerland) aiming to support productions and postproductions of films from Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe and supported by the Direction of Development and Co-operation of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In October 2006 received the Korean Cinema Award at the 11th Pusan International Film Festival and was jury member in numerous film festivals like Cannes (2000 Jury Camera d’Or), San Sebastian (2003 Altadis-New Directors Award Jury), etc. Currently works as expert and consultant.
