Biography

Carla Simón (1986) was raised in a small Catalan village. She graduated in Audiovisual Communication by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and spent an Exchange year at the University of California. In 2011 she was awarded with the prestigious scholarship of Obra Social “la Caixa” and moved to the UK to study a MA in Filmmaking at the London Film School. There, she directed her short films BORN POSITIVE, LIPSTICK and LAS PEQUEÑAS COSAS, all selected to several international film festivals. Her last short film, LACUNA (2016) is a very personal project that the director made with her mother’s letters. ESTIU 1993 is her debut film, produced by Inicia Films and Avalon. It premiered at the Berlinale 2017 where it won the GWFF Best First Feature Award and the Generation Kplus Grand Prix Jury Award. The film won more than 30 prizes in festivals all over the world and it was the Spanish Oscar submission. While preparing her second feature, Carla teaches film to young people through Cinema en Curs and to film students at UPF and ESCAC.
