Janis Rafa completed her education in Fine Art at the University of Leeds (2002-2012) with a doctorate in video art practice and was a resident at the Rijksakademie (2013-2014) with a scholarship by Alexander S. Onassis Foundation. In 2019 she presented her first museum solo at Centraal Museum Utrecht, which combined Rafa’s sculptures and recent video practice. During 2020, Rafa completed a film commission by Fondazione In Between Art Film for the project Mascarilla 19: Codes of Domestic Violence that will travel during 2021.

Her first feature fiction film, Kala azar (2020) had its world premiere in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (KNF award), followed by a Dutch cinema release (Aug 2020). The film had its US premiere at New Directors/ New Films at MoMA & Lincoln Centre in New York (Dec 2020) and has participated in several festivals: Hong Kong IFF (winner Special Mention), Black Canvas CFF (winner Best Cinematography), Tarkovsky IFFZ, Galway IFF, Beach FF (winner Best Film), Netherlands Film Festival (VEVAM  prize), Thessaloniki IFF, Lo Schermo del’ Arte, Mostra de Valencia and New Horizons.

Rafa’s works and films has also been shown at MAXXI (2020), State of Concept Athens (2020), Central Museum Utrecht (2019), Manifesta 12 (2018), Palazzo Medici Riccardi (2017), Centre d’art Contemporain Chanot (2017), Kunsthalle Munster (2017), Museum Voorlinden (2017), EYE Film Institute (2016), Kunstfort Vijfhuizen (2016), Palazzo Strozzi (2015), State Museum of Contemporary Art Thessaloniki (2011), Manifesta 8 (2010), and BFI (2012), Les Recontres Internationales (2016/17), IFFR (2015), Vienna IFF (2015) among other venues. Her work is in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Centraal Museum, Museum Voorlinden and Fondazione In Between Art Film.
