biography

Luís Urbano was born in 1968. He graduated in Economics at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. In 1996, he founded the cultural production cooperative “Curtas Metragens, CRL”, the organization behind the renowned Vila do Conde International Short Film Festival. He has been one of the Festival's directors and spearheaded the Portuguese Short Film Agency from 2000 to 2005. In 2005, he joined Sandro Aguilar's production company “O Som e a Fúria” as partner and general manager. Since then, he has produced fiction features, documentaries and shorts, from directors such as Manoel de Oliveira, Miguel Gomes, Sandro Aguilar, João Nicolau, Ivo M. Ferreira, Eugène Green, FJ Ossang, Lucrecia Martel, among others.
In 2007 he participated in Producers on the Move, Cannes 2007 — European Film Promotion.
He is a member of the Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science.

PRODUCTION COMPANY’S PROFILE

O Som e a Fúria was created in September 1998. The company is fully dedicated to film production in order to establish a connection with independent auteur cinema. The quality of its proposals, associated with the development of the individual universes of its authors, are the backbone of this production company.
It has been working with directors such as Miguel Gomes, Manoel de Oliveira, João Nicolau, Salomé Lamas and Eugène Green.
Co-productions have proven essential to the company’s success, with collaborations with France, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Argentina and the USA.
Besides feature films (fiction and documentary) it also keeps producing short films, which were originally its main core, to discover new talents.
It’s feature films have been commercially screened in, among others, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium, Switzerland, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, USA and Japan.
Its productions are usually present in Years Best Films lists, in international publications as “Cahiers du Cinema”, “Sight & Sound”, “The Guardian”, “New Yorker”, “New York Times”, “Film Comment” and “Clarin”.
At the same time, since 2003, O Som e a Fúria began distributing the work that it has been producing.
The managing partners are Luís Urbano, producer, and Sandro Aguilar, director and editor.
