biography

Debarati Gupta is an independent filmmaker and screenwriter based in Kolkata. She made her debut feature film Hoichoi in 2013. Urban Indian middle-class women, their vulnerabilities, and the quest for their identities have been the central theme of her films. But with the current script, she shifted her focus from urban to the rural life of India. She directed two more films - a thriller, Kalkijug in 2015, and a relationship drama, Önek Diner Pöre in 2018. She has also written screenplays for various web series in Zee5 Premium.
Before making films she worked as an assistant director in Chatrak, by Sri Lankan filmmaker, Vimukthi Jayasundara. It was screened at several international film festivals including the Director’s Fortnight, at Cannes in 2011. She was also associated with veteran Bengali filmmaker Bappaditya Bandyopadhyay as an assistant and writer.
Debarati did her post-graduation in Journalism and graduated in Economics from Calcutta University.
