About FeatureLab – audience design
FeatureLab – audience design is a training programme that aims at international audiovisual professionals wishing to gain solid hands-on experience within a workshop framework, creating audience engagement strategies for feature film projects in various stages of development.

4 audience designers will work together in teams on 2 Indonesian feature film projects that are attending the FeatureLab programme (as part of a partnership between TFL and the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy). The participants will develop and draft innovative audience engagement strategies to inspire the films’ future distribution. In addition, the 4 participants will be presented in the TFL Catalogue and at the annual TFL Meeting Event in November 2017.

Early audience awareness and an understanding of how to use audience engagement in the development and later promotion of a film are an important part of the new film production and distribution landscape. Reaching and communicating with possible audiences at an earlier stage is an aspect that needs to be explored from a multi-angle approach and the FeatureLab - audience design programme aims at sharing insights into steps that help build a concrete strategy to later support a film’s sales and distribution.

Audience design goes beyond a classical film marketing approach by using storytelling and narrative as a driving force. The approach seeks to build communities, social and digital media outreach, as well as off-line activities around the projects involved. The workshop format is open, playful and experimental.

Audience designers will work both in a group of four and in teams of two, meeting with the projects’ filmmakers and producers. A tutor, and several trainers, will guide them through the development, research, writing and presentation process. Participants will also meet relevant guest trainers and network with the FeatureLab - 360 participants and their tutors/trainers. Some research and writing work between the workshops is to be expected.
