About FeatureLab – audience design
FeatureLab – audience design is a training programme that aims at international audiovisual professionals wishing to gain solid hands-on experience within a workshop framework, creating audience engagement strategies for feature film projects in various stages of development.

4 Audience Designers will work together as a group and in in teams on a Sardinian feature film project (according to the partnership between TFL and the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission, hosting the 1st workshop). Participants will develop and draft an innovative audience engagement strategy to inspire the film's future distribution. In addition, the 4 participants will be presented in the TFL Catalogue and at the annual TFL Meeting Event in November 2018.

Early audience awareness and an understanding of how to use audience engagement in the development and later promotion of a film are an important part of the new film production and distribution landscape. Reaching and communicating with possible audiences at an earlier stage is an aspect that benefits from being explored within a multi-angle approach. The FeatureLab – audience design programme aims at sharing insights into steps that help build a concrete strategy to later support a film’s sales and distribution.

Audience Design goes beyond a classical film marketing approach by using storytelling and narrative as a driving force. The approach seeks to identify a project’s goals, to build communities, social and digital media outreach, as well as off-line activities based on the project involved. The workshop format is open, playful and experimental and depends on the active engagement of the participants.

Audience Designers will work as a group, individually, and in small teams, as well as collaborating with the film project’s team. A tutor will guide them through the development, research, writing and assessment process. Participants will also network with the FeatureLab project’s holders and their trainers. Research and writing work to create the strategy is to be expected between the workshops. A group Skype follow-up with the tutor, between June and November, is scheduled to discuss the progress of the group’s strategy work.
