David Pope has worked in the Cinema industry for over 20 years.
His background is in audio and electronics, with an HND in electronics and control engineering from Cambridge College of Technology and a diploma in sound engineering from the Association of Professional Recording Studios (APRS).
He is a member of the Audio Engineering Society, BKSTS and the IOD (Institute of Directors).
David spent the early part of his career as product manager with Neve Electronics. Having brought the highly successful Neve V series to the market, David took his audio console experience to Sony Broadcast & Communications in 1984. Later he launched a consultancy business providing product support and training to the television, radio and music recording industries.
In the late nineties David returned to Sony to develop a new business, Sony Cinema Products Europe, which first fired his enthusiasm for cinema surround sound. Building on his Cinema experience, he joined DTS Europe in 2001 as Director of Business Development for DTS’s new electronic subtitling system. David played a key part in getting the DWG’s (Disability Working Group) trial programme started in cinemas across the UK. This went on to become the highly successful UK Film Council supported initiative to equip cinemas with subtitling equipment for the deaf and audio description for the blind.
In January 2010 David joined XDC (now Dcinex) as Director of Operations for UK and IE. He established dcinex as the leading digital cinema company for the independent exhibition sector, winning the contracts for the DFP (Digital Funding partnership), Reel Cinemas, Scott and the Empire Cinema chain. The DFP ensured that even small art-house and second run cinemas can benefit from VPF (virtual print fee) funding, thereby preserving the UK’s traditional cinema heritage.
At the CineEurope convention in Barcelona on June 25th 2013 MusicScreen Ltd, a company founded by David Pope was launched to the cinema industry community. The company broadcast live music events into cinema from iconic venues around the world. The opening event, ‘The Best of Keane, Live from Berlin’ on the 6th November 2013, contracted with Universal Music as an integral part of the bands promotion of their new album. As CEO, Pope now drives development and aims to establish the company as a leading provider of popular music concerts to the cinema industry. The latest project, Sony Music’s artist, Laura Mvula Live from The Paradiso Amsterdam, screened on March 5th 2015. For more information on MusicScreen projects go to www.musicscreen.co.uk
