Chu Hoi Ying is a Hong Kong-born, Taiwan-based writer-director. In her films, family, memory and death haunt the people we become, the choices we make and the words we leave unsaid. After an MFA in film from HKBU, she trained at the Asian Film Academy, Busan Asian Film School, the Golden Horse Film Academy and the Fantastic Film School (BIFAN), and took part in Berlinale Talents. Her short 3 Generations 3 Days (2019), a tender portrait of three generations of women in one family, won Best Live Action Short Film at the Golden Horse Awards and Best Director at Hong Kong's Fresh Wave, before screening at Palm Springs ShortFest and other international festivals. Her subsequent short, After the Cat (2024), in which an ageing mother and daughter face the death of their cat, turns a small domestic moment into a meditation on mortality. It won Best Short Film at the Pingyao International Film Festival and the Jury Award at the Kaohsiung Film Festival, with a further selection at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. Her short The Soft Weight of Mud was selected for Berlinale Talents Lab 2026. Half and Half, is her debut feature in development.
