EAT ME

Two twin cyclists crave success – one plays clean, one dirty. How far will they go to win?

synopsis

In an elite sports-academy, Anka (19) personifies “the absence of failure”, unlike the rest of her family. Her twin brother Jan is a distinctly average cyclist. Decent enough to hang in, but never a winner. Her father Walter is an ex-pro labelled “shame of a nation” after his doping scandals in the 90s. An embarrassment that hangs over the family to this day. The new season starts as usual, with Anka winning and Jan in her shadow. But what is unusual is the sudden disappearance of a girl from the academy. Even more unusual is that chastened Walter suddenly gets the prestigious job as directeur sportif. But the most unusual is that Jan’s performance skyrockets, after he takes part in a covert study for a new sports diet. After more female cyclists vanish, Anka starts her own investigation, certain that the vanishings, Jan’s mysterious performance and her dad’s new job must be doping-connected. What the twins don’t know is that Jan’s new diet requires eating female athletes’ meat.

Director’statement

In the world of sports, stories of underdog losers transforming into euphoric winners always pull the heartstrings. But when the loser plays dirty to get there, doing bad things for good reasons, can you still find yourself rooting for him? Sure, we admire perfect Anka for her unquestionable talent, but just like her brother Jan, we also envy her and urge him to escape her oppressive shadow – even if he’s cheating. But what if we discover that the price of Jan winning is him eating female athletes’ meat? In this show we want to explore the idea that great success only comes with great sacrifice. We all know the feeling too well: when, after years of blood, sweat and tears, the fruits of our labour don’t blossom and someone else takes the place that was rightfully ours. For us filmmakers too, success is the supreme sign of respect and pride, and in a metaphorical way, our series asks: how far are any of us willing to go to succeed? And if you don’t agree? Well, EAT ME.
