Mikel Gurrea

Biography

Born in Donostia in 1985, Mikel Gurrea is a writer-director based in Barcelona. Thanks to a scholarship, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue an MA in Filmmaking from the London Film School. His short films Foxes (2015) and Heltzear (2021) have been selected at festivals such as Venice, San Sebastian and Montreal and his dramatic work as a playwright has opened in theatres like London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Madrid’s Fernán-Gómez. Inspired by his experiences working in the cork harvesting campaign, he wrote and directed his debut feature Suro (2022), which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the San Sebastian FF, where it picked up two more awards. The film was selected at many international film festivals and went on to gain two nominations at the Spanish Academy Awards, (Best New Director and Best Lead Actress for Victoria Luengo). With the same actress at the center, Mikel is currently developing his second feature, Sants, also taking part in MFI Script 2 Film Workshop and the Catalan Film Academy Residency.
