The upcoming edition of Alice Nella Città (15-25 October 2020) – the parallel and independent section of the Rome Film Fest dedicated to the new generations of filmmakers – will host, Out of Competition, the world premiere of CUBAN DANCER by Roberto Salinas.
After the acclaimed THE TROUBLEMAKER, BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE UNITED NATIONS (Havana Film Festival 2015), Salinas’ second documentary feature CUBAN DANCER focuses, once again, on social and cultural issues.
It stars Alexis, a young talented student of the National Ballet School of Cuba. Forced to emigrate with his parents to Miami, he will have to start again from scratch while facing many situations common to teenagers: rejection, loneliness and the difficulty of a long-distance relationship with his girlfriend. This intimate coming-of-age portrait uses some of the most iconic world events as a backdrop – President Obama’s visit to Cuba, the election of Donald Trump and the death of Fidel Castro, to name a few.
The project was supported through the TFL Audience Design Fund 2019, receiving a distribution grant of € 40.000 for its release in 3 territories, as well as participating in a tailor-made consultation with TFL-trained Audience Designers Benjamin Cölle and Riema Reybrouck.
CUBAN DANCER is produced by Indyca (Italy), in co-production with Filmoption International (Canada) and Valdivia Film (Chile), while the world sales are handled by Deckert Distribution and Filmoption International.
Last, but not least, Alice nella Città 2020 will also feature Philippe Lacôte’s LA NUIT DES ROIS within the section Sintonie, organized in collaboration with Venice Film Festival - which hosted the world premiere of Lacôte’s sophomore film in September.
