Past Future Continuous

For forty years, my cousin Maryam, a reluctant immigrant in the US, has not forgotten her escape from Iran’s border wrapped in a sheep’s skin.

synopsis

Maryam is an involuntary immigrant in the US, who after forty years has not forgotten her escape from Iran’s border wrapped in a sheep’s skin. Maryam is always worried about her elderly parents and in constant visual connection with the home in Iran from thousands of kilometers through surveillance cameras. These cameras take her to the days of the 1979 revolution. Today, Iran is again experiencing turbulent days and now Maryam encounters her revolutionary past and revolutionary girls who are challenging the present system.

Director’statement

The idea of the new film came from common observations, imaginations and life experiences of many family members and friends who had to leave Iran involuntarily. In our large family, in our large city, there are many parents whose home lights are turned off. They are alone. Their children, their flesh and blood, left Iran years ago. From every home, one, two, three people... leave or have left, and one or two remain behind. For years, those closest to me get further. The dearest ones; sisters, close and distant family, childhood friends... Our home lights turned off one by one...
